Activities We Do at Keen Kidz - Afterschool Edition

When parents are searching for afterschool Waterford services, they’re often looking for more than just somewhere safe for their children to go after the school bell rings.

They’re looking for a place where children can unwind, be themselves, get support with homework, and have fun with friends. At Keen Kidz, our afterschool programme offers all of this and more.

We cater for children from Junior Infants right through to 6th Class, and our activities reflect the diverse interests, energy levels, and needs of this age range. Let us take you through what a typical week looks like in our afterschool service.

A Warm Welcome and Settling In

Our afterschool day begins with collection from school. Children are safely walked to our setting at the Ballygunner GAA Complex, where they’re greeted by our friendly team who know each child by name.

The first priority when children arrive is giving them time to decompress. School can be wonderful, but it’s also tiring and stimulating. Children need time to relax, have a snack, chat with friends, and settle into the different rhythm of afterschool.

We provide healthy snacks and drinks, giving children the fuel they need after a busy school day. This snack time is also a valuable social opportunity where children catch up with friends, tell us about their day, and transition from school mode to afterschool mode.

Homework Support

We know that homework can be a source of stress for families, which is why we offer dedicated homework support as part of our Waterford afterschool base.

A Calm Homework Environment

We provide a quiet, well-lit space for children to complete their homework. Our team is available to help children understand tasks, offer encouragement, and provide support when they’re stuck. We’re not there to do homework for children, but to support their independence and problem-solving.

Flexibility and Understanding

We recognise that some children work better with homework straight away, while others need time to play first. Some find homework easy, while others find it challenging. We work with each child individually, understanding their needs and approaches.

We also communicate with parents about homework. If a child is finding something particularly difficult, if they haven’t finished, or if we notice patterns that might be worth discussing, we’ll let you know.

Creative Arts and Crafts

Creativity flourishes in our afterschool sessions. We provide a wide range of arts and crafts activities that allow children to express themselves, develop fine motor skills, and create things they’re proud of.

Seasonal Crafts

Throughout the year, we create seasonal crafts linked to festivals, holidays, and the changing seasons. Children might make autumn leaf collages, Christmas decorations, Easter crafts, or summer-themed artwork. These activities connect children with the rhythms of the year and create lovely keepsakes.

Open-Ended Art

We also provide materials for open-ended creative exploration. Painting, drawing, collage, modelling with clay or playdough, junk art, and more. These activities aren’t about following instructions to create identical products—they’re about imagination, experimentation, and creative expression.

Craft Projects

From friendship bracelets to cardboard constructions, from painting stones to making slime, we introduce children to various craft techniques and projects. These activities develop hand-eye coordination, following instructions, planning, and the satisfaction of completing projects.

Games and Quizzes

Games are a huge part of our afterschool programme. They’re fun, but they’re also valuable learning opportunities that develop strategic thinking, turn-taking, teamwork, and resilience.

Board Games and Card Games

We have a collection of age-appropriate games that children can choose to play. From classic games to newer favourites, these activities teach children about rules, strategy, winning and losing graciously, and working together.

Quizzes

Our team regularly organises quizzes on various topics – general knowledge, nature, geography, pop culture, and more. Children love the challenge and the friendly competition. Quizzes also support learning in a fun, low-pressure way.

Group Games

Circle games, team challenges, and cooperative games help build our afterschool community. These activities are especially valuable for helping new children settle in and for strengthening friendships across different age groups.

Oral Language Activities

Language development doesn’t stop when children start primary school. Our team continues to support oral language through various engaging activities.

Story Time

We have a library of books suitable for various ages and reading levels. Children can read independently or share books with friends.

Drama and Talent Shows

From impromptu performances in our Keen Kidz Talent Show, to more structured drama activities, we encourage children to express themselves through drama, develop storytelling skills, and build confidence.

Physical Activities and Outdoor Play

After sitting in school all day, children need to move! We provide plenty of opportunities for physical activity.

Outdoor Play

Weather permitting, we make full use of our outdoor space. Running, playing tag, ball games, climbing, exploring—outdoor play is essential for physical health, releasing energy, and connecting with nature.

Structured Physical Activities

We organise sports and games, obstacle courses, dance sessions, and other structured physical activities. These help develop coordination, teamwork, and a love of movement.

Balancing Energy Levels

We’re mindful that different children have different energy levels and interests. While some children want to run and play football, others might prefer quieter outdoor activities like nature observation or chalk drawing. We cater for this diversity.

STEM Activities

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics come alive through hands-on activities in our Waterford afterschool setting.

Building and Construction

Lego, blocks, construction sets, and recycled materials become tools for engineering challenges. Children plan, build, test, and refine their creations, developing spatial awareness and problem-solving skills.

Nature Walks

Observing insects, identifying plants, watching the seasons change, caring for our garden—these activities connect children with the natural world and develop scientific observation skills.

Cooking and Food Activities

We regularly involve children in simple cooking and food preparation activities. These are always popular and pack in learning across multiple areas.

Children might make their own pizzas, create fruit kebabs, bake biscuits, or prepare no-cook treats. These activities teach following recipes, measuring, sequencing, hygiene, and cooperation. Plus, there’s the reward of eating something delicious that you’ve made yourself!

Free Play and Social Time

Amongst all these structured activities, we always ensure children have time for free play and social interaction. This unstructured time is valuable for developing friendships, negotiating play scenarios, resolving conflicts, and simply having fun.

Whether children are playing imagination games, chatting with friends, playing informal football matches, or making up their own activities, this free time is an essential part of childhood and social development.

Supporting Different Ages Together

One of the strengths of our afterschool Waterford service is that we cater for a wide age range—Junior Infants to 6th Class. This creates a family-like atmosphere where older children often help younger ones, and younger children look up to older peers.

We plan activities that can be adapted for different ages and abilities. A craft activity might be simpler for younger children and more complex for older ones. Games can have different rules depending on age. This mixed-age environment creates a nurturing community and teaches valuable social skills.

Responding to Children’s Interests

Just as in our Montessori programme, we listen to children’s interests and respond to them in our afterschool planning. If children are excited about a particular topic, sport, or activity, we build on that enthusiasm.

Recently, several children showed interest in coding and technology, so we introduced some simple coding games and activities. When children were talking a lot about football, we organised mini-tournaments. This responsive approach keeps our programme fresh and relevant to the children we’re actually working with.

A Safe Space to Be Themselves

Perhaps most importantly, our afterschool programme provides a safe, warm space where children can relax and be themselves. They can laugh with friends, try new things without pressure, express themselves creatively, and unwind after the structure of the school day.

Parents tell us their children bound through our doors with enthusiasm, excited to see their friends and find out what activities are planned. That enthusiasm is what drives everything we do.
