Healthy Eating at Keen Kidz: Nourishing Bodies and Minds
When your child arrives for their Montessori session or afterschool care at Keen Kidz, they’re not just here to learn and play, we also want to make sure they’re properly nourished. Food is fuel for growing bodies and developing brains. The choices we make about what children eat can have a real impact on their energy levels, concentration, mood, and long-term health habits.
At Keen Kidz, we take nutrition seriously. That’s why we’ve developed clear guidelines around healthy lunches, limited sweets and chocolate, and a strict no-nuts policy. These aren’t arbitrary rules, they’re based on research about children’s health and our commitment to creating a safe, inclusive environment where all children can thrive.
Why Healthy Lunches Matter
Children are growing and developing at an incredible pace. They need regular, nutritious meals to support that growth, fuel their learning, and maintain steady energy and mood throughout the day.
Research consistently shows that children who eat nutritious lunches and snacks have better concentration, improved behaviour, more stable energy levels, and better overall health outcomes. Conversely, diets high in sugar and processed foods can lead to energy crashes, difficulty concentrating, and challenges with emotional regulation.
When your child is in our care, whether at our Montessori Waterford sessions or our afterschool Waterford programme, we want them to have the nutritional support they need to engage fully in learning and play.
What We Mean by Healthy Lunches
When we ask parents to send healthy lunches, we’re talking about:
Protein: Lean meats (chicken, turkey), fish, eggs, beans, lentils, or plant-based protein options. These help build and maintain muscles and keep children feeling satisfied.
Whole grains: Brown bread, brown rice, whole grain pasta, or oats. These provide sustained energy and important fibre for healthy digestion.
Fruits and vegetables: A colourful variety as these provide essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that support everything from immune function to brain development.
Healthy fats: Avocado, olive oil (not nuts or sesame seeds – see below), or oily fish. These support brain development and help children absorb important vitamins.
Dairy or alternatives: Milk, yoghurt, or fortified plant-based alternatives provide calcium and other nutrients important for growing bones.
The key is balance and variety, we want children eating real, whole foods that nourish their growing bodies.
Why We Say No to Nuts
Keen Kidz operates as a total nut-free zone due to high allergy rates. This is one of our most important and non-negotiable rules.
The reason is straightforward: tree nut and peanut allergies can be life-threatening. Anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction, can occur within minutes, and even tiny traces of nuts can trigger reactions in severely allergic children. The nut-free zone protects all children in our care, particularly those with serious allergies who deserve to feel safe while eating.
This means:
- No peanut butter or other nut butters in lunches
- No mixed nuts or nut-based snacks
- No products that may contain traces of nuts
- No seeds (including sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and pumpkin seeds)
We understand this requires careful label-reading and planning on parents’ part, but it’s a non-negotiable safety measure. When we create an environment where a child with a nut allergy can eat safely without fear, we’re creating genuine inclusion.
If you’re unsure whether a food contains nuts, please ask our team or check the packaging carefully. We’re always happy to help families navigate this.

Limited Chocolate and Sweets
We encourage parents to send lunches and snacks that are free from or very limited in chocolate, sweets, and sugary treats.
This isn’t about being strict or denying children treats, it’s about supporting their health and wellbeing. Here’s why this matters:
Energy and focus: High-sugar foods cause rapid blood sugar spikes and crashes, which leads to energy crashes, difficulty concentrating, and mood swings. Children need stable energy to engage in learning and play.
Dental health: Frequent sugar consumption contributes to tooth decay, which can affect children’s health and confidence.
Healthy habits: The eating habits children develop now often continue into adulthood. By normalising healthy eating choices, we’re helping children develop positive relationships with food.
Fairness: When some children have sugary treats and others don’t, it can create tension and feelings of unfairness. Keeping treats limited at the service level helps level the playing field.
That said, we’re not saying children should never have treats. Occasional treats are part of a healthy, balanced approach to food. We celebrate birthdays, special occasions, and seasonal events with special foods. But these should be occasional, not daily.
Dietary Needs and Allergies
Every child is different. Some have allergies, intolerances, or dietary requirements based on health, culture, or family values (vegetarian, vegan, coeliac, etc.).
We take these seriously and work with families to ensure every child can participate fully in mealtimes and feel included. When you enrol your child with us, we ask about:
- Food allergies or intolerances
- Dietary preferences or requirements
- Cultural or religious food practices
- Any health-related nutritional needs
If your child has specific dietary requirements, please make sure our team is fully informed. We want to support your family’s choices whilst ensuring your child is properly nourished.
What We Provide
Breakfast Club: A nutritious breakfast consisting of toast, cereals, juice, and milk to start the school day right. Breakfast Club is available from 8:00 – 9:00 am, and children should arrive by 8:15 am if they want to enjoy breakfast before being escorted to school at 8:50 am.
Snacks: Healthy snacks during the day, typically fruit, yoghurt, or breadsticks and crackers.
Occasional treats: For birthdays, celebrations, and special occasions, we provide treats. We’ll let parents know in advance about any treats we’re offering so families can make informed choices if they prefer not to participate.
We encourage parents to bring packed lunches for children attending for lunch or the full afternoon. These lunches should reflect the healthy eating guidelines discussed above.
Food Safety at Keen Kidz
We take food safety seriously. Keen Kidz implements rigorous food management procedures based on the HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) Protocol to ensure all food is handled safely:
- Perishable food is immediately stored in our refrigerator or freezer upon arrival
- Fridge and freezer temperatures are checked and recorded daily
- All staff members wear gloves when handling food
- Staff follow strict hygiene procedures before preparing or serving food
- We promote healthy eating patterns through food-related activities that involve children
These procedures protect all children and ensure that meals and snacks are not only nutritious but also safe.
Partnership Around Food
Just as with every other aspect of your child’s experience at Keen Kidz, we see nutrition as a partnership between home and our setting.
We’d encourage you to:
- Send nutritious lunches that follow our guidelines
- Notify us of any allergies or dietary requirements clearly
- Chat with our team about foods your child particularly enjoys or struggles with
- Work with us on the nut-free policy – we know it takes thought and planning
- Ask questions if you’re unsure about what’s appropriate
Our team is always happy to discuss nutrition, answer questions about our policies, or help you plan lunches that are both healthy and appealing to your child.
Building Healthy Habits
At Keen Kidz, we believe that what children eat matters. It matters for their physical health, their ability to concentrate, their emotional wellbeing, and the lifelong habits they’re developing.
By sending healthy lunches, supporting our nut-free policy, and limiting sugary treats, you’re investing in your child’s immediate wellbeing and their long-term health. You’re also teaching them that their body matters, that healthy food is normal and delicious, and that we make caring choices for ourselves and for others (like the child with a nut allergy who needs to feel safe).
